90’s Movies: The Bodyguard
My daughter wanted to know what the big deal was about Whitney Houston. She watches American Idol and Randy is continually saying that the contestants shouldn’t take on “a Whitney song” or she hears about Whitney’s trials and tribulations with Bobby Brown but she didn’t know what the big deal was about.
The best way I knew to get it across to her was to revisit The Bodyguard. Since she wasn’t even born when The Bodyguard came out in 1992 it was entirely new to her and since I hadn’t watched it in several years it was equally enjoyable for me.
It was a real treat to see a Whitney not ravaged by drugs and hard living. It’s true the Kevin (Frank Farmer) was younger but he was no less charismatic. He played a stoic loner very similar to his character in Open Range. In spite of his disdain for celebrities he’s drawn to Rachel (Whitney) and eventually falls in love with her while trying to protect her from a hired killer. This film has a little bit of something for everyone. It’s a love story with suspense, action and drama. I’ll have to say that my favorite scene isn’t between the lovebirds. It’s between Frank Farmer and Tony Scipelli (Mike Starr) in the kitchen after Rachal escapes the club.
If it’s been awhile since you watched this film maybe it’s time to grab a bowl of popcorn and revisit the legendary Whitney Houston.
